How to Backup Your iTunes Library to Disc

by

Imagine that your computer crashes, you loose your data, and have no backup. A scenario like this would require that you download all of your purchased content and transfer all of your CD’s to iTunes again. This can be both time consuming and quite a pain because all of your favorites, play counts, and playlists would also be gone. You can remedy this issue by backing up your computer or by backing up your iTunes library to CD or DVD. The guide below will show you how to create a backup of your iTunes library.

The number of CD’s or DVD’s required for a backup of your iTunes library is dependent of your library and the options you select below. To use the backup once it has been made, simply open iTunes and insert the first disc in the series.

If you have any comments or questions, please post them below.

Note: I used iTunes 9.2 running on Windows 7 for this guide.

I have just made backup discs for my itunes music library. I am wondering how I will know that the discs are ok, and will restore my itunes music, Will I need to put the discs in itunes now for restore, or do I only do this if my music is lost for any reason. I would be pleased if someone could answer this for me please.

Yes. You would only use them in case of data loss. If you are looking for
some peace of mind you can create two copies of your library or you can
create a copy on an external hard drive.

The first time I ever did a back up to disc I burned 100 DL DVD’s… I numbered the discs as I burned each one… Is there somewhere on my Mac where the data is stored (meaning, what music/movies are on which disc). It would obviously take me a lifetime to go through each disc and create a list. The data must be stored somewhere… Right?

100DL Discs? Wow! I’m not sure that there’s a way to review them…but the
backup is designed to be used in case there needs to be a restoration so I
don’t think there’s really a way to catalogue what each disc has. You may
want to check out Apple’s support forums to see if something like that is
    available.
