With the imminent launch of iOS 5 for the iPhone and the iPad, Apple is moving forward with its new music offering for iTunes, Match.

iTunes Match stores your entire music library in iCloud (another new service from Apple debuting this fall). When you store your music in iCloud you can access it from anywhere so long as you have an Internet connection.

Here’s a copy of the email, thanks to Mike for the tip!

The email reads as follows:

iTunes Match stores your complete music library in iCloud, allowing you to enjoy your collection anywhere, anytime, on any iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or computer.

iTunes Match beta is currently available to developers in the United States. Beta subscribers will receive iTunes Match service during the beta period plus an additional 3 months for free with their 12 month paid subscription.

To get started with iTunes Match, download the current version of iOS 5 beta and iTunes 10.5 beta 6.1 with iTunes Match. Once installed, choose Turn On iTunes Match from the Store menu, and click “Subscribe for $24.99.”

Please note that you must maintain a local backup of your iTunes library as well as any music you add to iCloud. Apple will periodically reset your iCloud library during the beta and it is critical that you backup your music regularly. Some features and optimizations of iTunes Match will not be available during the beta.

So if you are a developer head over to developer.apple.com and download the new iTunes version and the latest version of iOS.

If you thought that Facebook was the only social website where you can get a good dose of gaming, you’ll love to know that now Google with its Google+ Project is yet another place where you can get your game on.

In order to play all you need is a Google+ account and some time to spare.

Once you are signed on to your Google+ account, simply click the new Games icon on the top bar and you will be greeted with a splash page featuring some of the games on the new platform.

You will quickly discover that the list of games is quite small (total of 16 games as of this writing), but like all things Google we should see more interest once Google+ moves out of beta.

Don’t worry Angry Birds lovers, your favorite is on here as well.

What do you think about Games on Google+?

In a recently published blog post, Google announced the introduction of Help Snippets directly into Google Spreadsheets.

The Help Snippets are similar to those found in Excel where you are provided with a snippet of information regarding a formula as you enter it into a cell.

This is a great step forward for users who come from Excel and are using Google Spreadsheets for the first time. You not only save time by not having to fish for the information elsewhere, but it also gives it a more familiar feel.

In the screenshot above you can see the new Help Snippets in action. To see the snippet simply enter the = sign followed by a supported function and the Help Snippet will automatically appear.

What do you think about this new feature? Do you think that Excel still reigns supreme?

In today’s keynote at the World Wide Developer Conference, Apple provided a glimpse of the new features that will be available in iOS 5.

Apple promises over 200 new features, but only showcased the 10 following features.

1. Better Notifications

Although it’s taken a while for Apple to address the issue of notifications on iOS devices it looks like the new notification center is the right solution for the overwhelming amount of notifications pushed to iOS devices.

The new Notification Center sorts notifications by Apps so that you can quickly browse through them. A combination of gestures allow you to access the notification on the app, dismiss the notification, and other actions.

So you can say goodbye to those obtrusive notifications hijacking your screen while you’re doing something on your iOS device.

2. Newsstand App

I’m sure Rupert Murdoch is seething at the thought of News Stand for iOS devices. After all the money that was invested in The Daily, Apple brings a News Stand app to iOS devices.

Think of News Stand as an iBooks for periodicals. Great app that may actually help publishers sell subscriptions.

3. Apple + Twitter = Sharing Bliss

Whether you are a Twitter user or have never used it, tweeting will now be easier than ever.

In iOS 5, Apple brings Twitter to the iOS core so that users can tweet pictures from the camera roll, share a link from Safari, and even tweet without opening a Twitter client.

You’re looking at a single sign-on for Twitter on the iPhone and the ability to Tweet from about any place on your iPhone.

4. Safari Updates

Updates to Safari on iOS devices are centered around two main themes.

The ability to read content later (Reading Lists) and the stripping of ads and other distracting content from articles on the web.

The first is similar to a service like Read It Later which allows you to save articles so that you can read them at a later time, even when you are offline.

The second was brought over from a feature introduced in Safari 5 and a bit more controversial in my opinion.

As an online publisher, part of my revenue is generated from ads placed on articles like this. If Safari for iOS devices strips the ads from my articles (about 20% of my visitors use mobile Safari), that’s a potential loss of 20% of my ad impressions.

So I’m not sure what’s going to happen here. Perhaps Apple will provide publishers with code or an option that allows you to opt-out of this feature.

5. Reminders, Apple’s Answer to a To Do List on the iPhone?

Reminders is pretty much a To-Do list on iOS devices that makes use of location information to trigger reminders.

So if you want to remind yourself to get some milk next time you walk into a grocery store, you will be able to set the reminder to trigger when you are in the vicinity of the store.

The geo-location aspect of Reminders appears to be optional, but it is certainly a real cool application of location based information.

6. Camera

As Apple seeks to claim the throne of the most used camera, updates for the Camera abound.

Although it lacks features found in Android cameras, the updates to the camera will sure please lots of iPhone & iPod Touch users.

You can access the Camera by using the Lock Screen button. You will also be able to snap away pictures by using the Volume up button, so no need to use the on-screen button or locate the App on the Home screen.

Camera users can enable grid lines, zoom with pinch gestures and even perform basic photo edits without having to use another app.

Edits demoed were crop, rotate, and red eye reduction.

7. Mail Updates

Mail for iOS devices will bring basic rich-text formatting that will be accesible much like copy and paste are right now.

You will also be able to control indentation, flag messages, and drag email addresses to a message.

Support for S/MIME and a systemwide dictionary will also be available.

8. iOS 5 is Wire-Free

Finally, the ball and chain has been removed. You will be able to sync your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch without wires.

Best of all, you can go all iPad or iPhone without a PC/Mac to sync to. Great feature for users that are looking to get rid of a desktop or laptop in lieu of an iPad.

9. Game Center Updates

Not much here except for OS level support of turn-based games and some enhancements.

10. iMessage

If you were ever a BlackBerry user you know how much BlackBerry Messenger was missed when you left your BlackBerry for an iPhone. I know I did.

iMessage appears to be a Messenger-like application that will allow you to send pictures, text messages, and more to other iOS users.

The coolest feature previewed for this new tool is the ability to continue a conversation from one device to another, so if you started a conversation on your iPhone you could finish it on your iPad.

If you’re wondering when iOS 5 will become available, look no further than this fall. Registered developers can get their hands on an early build today in the developer center.

What do you think about the updates? Do they merit an iOS 5 badge or should this have been a dot version update, 4.4?

Steve Jobs returns from his leave of absence to preview iCloud, iOS 5, and Mac OS X Lion. The keynote preceding the Worldwide Developer Conference was jam packed with expected announcements and unexpected surprises.

Here’s a run down of the most prominent announcements in today’s keynote.

Forget iTunes, Use iCloud Instead

If you are sick and tired of being tethered to a PC or Mac with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, the new iCloud service will remedy this.

iCloud is pretty much iTunes on the Cloud. All of your music, apps, movies, and other content is stored in Apple’s Cloud service so that your iDevice is always synchronized and your data is readily available across all devices.

This means that if you lose your iPhone, you simply walk into an Apple store, get a replacement, and sync. No need for a PC or Mac to get your device synced and going again.

iCloud will also bring an end to MobileMe and allow files and documents to sync across all devices. The new service is expected to launch this fall.

iOS 5 Brings Much Needed Updates to iDevices

Today’s preview of iOS 5 satisfied most users, but left some (including myself) yearning for more. Rather than redo the OS, Apple has stuck to same look and feel for iOS 5 with the exception of notifications.

In iOS 5 you will find that notifications are less obtrusive thanks to the new Notification Center which sorts notifications by app.

You will also find over 200 new features, but Apple only previewed 10 main features, some of which are listed below.

Tight Twitter integration

New Notification Center

Wireless Sync & Backup

No need for a PC/Mac

iCloud Services (Photo Stream)

and more…

Check out our 10 New iOS Features guide to familiarize yourself with the new features found in Apple’s upcoming mobile OS.

iOS is set for release later this fall, however registered developers can get their hands on a copy today. You can also check out the iOS 5 video from Apple.

Lion Available July Only on Mac App Store

When Lion becomes available this July for $29.99 you will get the best of both worlds. iPad-like usability powered by Mac hardware.

Although Apple didn’t really show anything new for Lion, the new features certainly bring a totally new experience to Macs, so look forward to the upgrade in July.

What did you think about the announcements today? Is Apple headed in the right direction with Lion and iOS 5? Sound off in the comments section below.

With Google Maps being used by over 200 million mobile devices it isn’t any wonder why Google needs to keep updating. Google Maps for Android is getting some new looks with the new 5.5 update which include some new buttons, editing options, and viewing options.

Now on Google Maps you’ll be able to check-in to different places as well as rate places when you’re on a Place page. See the new buttons below:

With last month’s update for location history in Google Maps 5.3, you were able to see your location history for everywhere you’ve been. Now you have the ability to change your home and work locations so you can find out how much time you spend at either place.

The final new update to Google Maps 5.5 is a redesigned transit station page. You can now see upcoming transit stations better to help plan your route. The redesign includes upcoming departures for different lines, all of the transit lines serving the station, and links to nearby stations.

Just a short few weeks after the announcement of Google’s Chromebooks, which allow both businesses and schools to use this web-based computer for a small monthly service fee, we’re seeing more business related releases for the Chromebook. Google has teamed up with Citrix to create the Citrix Receiver for Chromebooks. The Citrix Receiver allows you to use your Chromebook to use all of your business desktop applications, allowing you to save money by not having to repurchase licenses for high end software. You will now be able to access your desktop virtually through Chromebooks with products from Citrix.

The Citrix Receiver should be available soon on the Chrome Web Store and is free of charge. However, to use the Receiver you must use Citrix XenDesktop or Citrix XenApp. It’s supported on more than 1,000 different Mac and PC models, 149 smartphones, 37 tables, and 10 different thing clients covering iOS, Android, webOS and Google ChromeOS.
