PayPal has been the dominating force in online payments for years. There have been many companies that have tried to beat and surpass PayPal, but so far, no competitors have really stepped up to the plate. American Express is taking their swing at online payment methods by offering an identical service to PayPal called “Serve”.

Serve will allow its users to make purchases and person-to-person payments via a variety of methods: online, mobile, and anywhere American Express is accepted. Just like PayPal, Serve can be funded from bank accounts, credit cards or from another Serve account.

Serve is nothing new, despite the press release making it seem like it’s a brand new product. They’re trying to make everyone catch on to the Serve trend by waiving consumer fees for the next six months. The fees include a 2.9% + 30cents when adding money to your account, which is free when using cash, debit or ACH. ATM Cash Withdrawals are also $2 a pop after the first one of each month. To put that in perspective, PayPal uses the same exact rate when you get paid for purchases or sending/receiving of personal transfers and only $1 per ATM withdrawal.

So far “Serve” is nothing new to the market, but American Express is planning on evolving the product into something better. We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but right now I’m not making the switch; are you?

Are you a Gmail user that misses the new email alerts we’re all so accustomed to? If this is the case, there is no need to worry. If you are using Gmail as your client of choice, chances are you probably have a browser window that is open all day long, if you happen to use Google Chrome as your Gmail browser of choice then all you need to do is download and install the Google Mail Checker Plus extension and you are set. Google Mail Checker plus provides users with three ways to receive email notifications.

The first is an email icon on the Chrome toolbar. The icon will change colors and display the number of unread messages. The icons can be customized with 10 different sets to choose from.

The second method of notification is via an alert pop-up box that will originate from the browser window near the toolbar. This notification will provide you with more information about the message and will give you the option to take action.

The third type of notification will be very similar to the notification found in Outlook. When enabled the notification will appear on the bottom right corner of the screen. This notification will have information about the email and you can click on it to open a Gmail window.

If you’re not convinced go and give this useful extension a spin and make sure to let us know what you think about it in the comments section below.

I’ve written about tricking Windows into allowing you to access Picasa databases on other locations, but I recently found an easy to use application the allows you to not only use databases stored in other locations, but also the ability to use multiple databases for different sets of pictures. The guide below will show you how to use the application as well as provide you with some tips.

This application solves the following Picasa shortcomings:

The database with pictures can’t be shared among different users (not on the same computer, not in a network).

You cannot choose where to put the database (eg. putting them on a network drive or NAS would be practical).

You can only use/have one database per user, choosing between multiple databases is not possible.

If you have any comments or questions please post them in the comments section below.

Download links can be found at the end of the article.

Note: I used Picasa 3.6 and Picasa Starter 1.4.4 running on Windows 7 Ultimate.

Think of Picasa Starter as a launch application for Picasa. If you wish to take advantage of the features provided by this application you will need to launch Picasa Starter to launch Picasa.

Welcome/Help Screen when you launch the application for the first time.

6. Click on Run Picasa to open the selected database.

Note: You will need to use this application to start Picasa from now on. It is the only way you will be able to select more than one database.

If you upload videos to YouTube and would like to get a pulse as to how your viewers feel, then you need to install the OpinionCloud extension for Google Chrome. Recently featured by Google, the OpinionCloud extension allows users to view a summary of Likes and Dislikes for a given YouTube video. This summary expands into two lists of keywords associated with Likes and Dislikes, this is the part that help you gauge the sentiment of those who Like the video or Dislike the video. You can click on an individual word and zero in on the comments where the word originated. As you will see in the screenshots below, this is a very powerful tool that not only will help you figure out what sucks about your videos, but it will also give you an insight as to what’s working for the competition.

Check out the screenshots below and try our the extension for yourself, it is certainly worth it. If you know of other extensions with similar capabilities, please post them in the comments section below.

1. When you open a YouTube video you will notice that next to the Like buttons there will be a small box with the comments summary in percentage of Likes and Dislikes. When you 2. click on this button the OpinionCloud comment summary will appear.

You will be able to get an overall feel of the sentiment expressed in the comments section for the chosen video. If you wish to see which comments pertain to specific keywords on either list, simply click on the word and you will see the associated comment(s).

Note: Negative comments were blurred out due to explicit content.

Description of Extension from Developer

This add-on implements opinion summarization of Web comments on YouTube and Flickr. Popular videos/photos often get up to thousands of comments and in order to get an idea about the crowd’s overall opinion one has to read all of them, which is of course impractical. The OpinionCloud helps to retrieve this important piece of information by generating an opinion word cloud for a given set of comments. If you have any comments, suggestions, or criticism, don’t hesitate to write a review. A note: summaries may contain explicit language, viewer discretion is advised. The opinions expressed in comments are those of the commenters alone.

As more of us rely on memory keys, thumb drives, and other portable storage devices to save our sensitive information, it is imperative that we ensure the stored information is secured and remains private. The list below is a compilation of various applications that are designed to encrypt the information on portable storage devices.

Most of the applications listed below are not free, except TrueCrypt which is my favorite. I also included a hardware based encryption product that promises to offer even more security than its software counterparts.

If you know of other applications that can help users keep their private information secure on their memory keys please post them below.

1 – Windows 7 BitLocker (Software)

In Windows 7 Microsoft extended BitLocker’s encryption capabilities to portable memory devices. The increased use and size present a significant threat for corporate America as more and more information is stored in these devices. It is in Microsoft’s best interest to include this great tool to the Professional and Ultimate versions of Windows 7 as it will be an extra selling point to corporate users that have relied on policies and third party software to protect data on the go.

2 – TrueCrypt (Software)

Unlike BitLocker which requires the purchase of an entire operating system to use, TrueCrypt is truly free. It is an open-source on-the-fly encryption application. It is on-the-fly because it does not require files to be manually encrypted or decrypted as with other applications. The best thing about TrueCrypt is its capabilities. It can encrypt entire hard drives or portable storage devices, it uses AES-256, Serpent, and Twofish algorithms to encrypt data. The best part is that it is free.

TrueCrypt works for Windows and Mac Download

3 – PenProtect (Software)

Another encryption application that allows users to secure the information on specified drives. Unlike TrueCrypt that creates an encrypted volume, PenProtect encrypts that files located on the device. With the use of the PenProtect executable users can access the encrypted files on their drives.

PenProtect can be downloaded as shareware and purchased for $19.00

4 – IronKey (Hardware)

Unlike the first three options Ironkey is a hardware-based encryption engine. Instead of using a normal memory device that runs encryption software, you would use encryption that is built-in as part of the device. This is probably the best method of encryption in that it combines hardware and software encryption to secure your files.

IronKey runs from $79-$199 for the 8GB version.

5 – Safebit (Software)

SafeBit is similar to TrueCrypt in that it offers on-the-fly software based encryption for files located on a specific directory. It uses AES based encryption and encrypted virtual disk drives to ensure that your information is safe.

Try it for free or Buy it for $39.95/license

6 – DriveLock (Software)

Drivelock offers full disk encryption for your hard drive and also offers encryption for mobile devices including Windows Mobile devices. The application also allows for control of encrypted data via network profiles that are configured upon setup of the software.

DriveLock can be purchased for $62.00 via PC Mall

7 – File Encryption XP (Software)

File Encryption XP encrypts files and folders using a strong Blowfish algorithm with 384-bit key. Protected files that can be decrypted without File Encryption XP is a built in program feature. You can create a self-extracting encrypted file and simply send it by mail or give it to someone on a floppy disk. If the recipient knows the password, he or she can execute this file to get the original document.

Shareware version Download | Purchase for $29.95

8 – Rohos Mini Drive(Software)

Similar to TruCrypt, DriveLock, and BitLocker to Go, Rohos Mini Drive creates hidden and encrypted partition on the USB flash drive memory.

Update – 1/5/2010 – Please Note: Rohos Mini does not allow Total Drive Encryption it is only container based and it will allow you to work with an encrypted USB drive on any guest PC without having to use administrative rights. Thanks to Paavv for pointing it out.

Rohos Mini Drive is Free – Download

9 – CryptoLock (Software)

CryptoLock provides quick and easy encryption for all of your files. The easy to use interface allows you to simply drag and drop your files between CryptoLock and Windows Explorer to add or extract files from an encrypted archive.

Shareware version Download | Purchase for $29.95

As more computer users flock to the cloud to store their information, the amount of personal information online is increasing at an exponential rate. Along with that growth is the increased risk associated with the exposure of private and sensitive information over the internet. When we upload personal data to services like Google Docs or transfer our emails to Gmail, we face an added level of risk exposing our personal and confidential information on the internet. I’ve been meaning to write this article for quite some time, but never got around to it. A recent comment by one my readers confirmed my reservations over the increased use of online services to save and work on potentially sensitive and private information.

In this article I will summarize some of the things that I do and that you too can repeat to reduce the likelihood of a breach to your personal information online. If you have a method you use and would like to share it or have other information that is useful please post it below. Browse safely.

1. Use Trusted Devices

Although elementary in nature, how many times have you signed on to your Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, or another account on a computer other than your own? If you know anything about keyloggers or other forms malware, you would think twice about signing on with any computer.

The bottom line is unless you trust the device that you are on, don’t use it. So how do you access you accounts if you have no choice? Please read #2 & 3.

2. Use Travel Accounts When Away from a Trusted Device

Travel accounts? What the heck is that? Like many people I have accumulated enough email addresses to warrant a spreadsheet that lists all of the user names and passwords…yes…that many. In reality there are 2 accounts that I use for sensitive information (bank statements, bills, receipts, personal information, etc) and those two use very strong passwords (see #3). The rest of the accounts use strong passwords as well, but contain information that is less sensitive (comment updates, subscriptions, etc). These accounts are normally setup to forward email to the sensitive accounts.

When I travel I disable the forwards to the sensitive account from the non-sensitive accounts and then enable fetching of emails on the sensitive account from the non-sensitive account. I then make sure that the leave emails on server option is enabled. This ensures that emails are fetched by the sensitive account, but remain in the non-sensitive account so that I can read the messages while traveling.

Refer to the diagram below for a visual explanation of this information.

3. Would the Strong Password Please Stand Up?

Your daughter’s birthday or sparky’s name are not very good candidates for passwords. Instead try something like 1b45Hd-45gO as a password – oh it’s too long? Well just so you have an idea of how weak sparky or someone’s birthday is, I have listed how different password types vary and the length of time it takes to crack them by a supercomputer.

*Denotes that the password is 5 characters in length

A Class F attack is an attack performed by a supercomputer which can generate 1,000,000,000 password combinations per second. Of course there aren’t supercomputers run by individuals for the sole purpose of cracking passwords, but considering that a fast dual processor computer can generate 100,000,000 password combinations per second one has to be aware of the simple fact that your password can be cracked. Luckily there are different controls in place that prevent passwords from being tried again and again. For instance there are several web portals that only allow 3 password tries, if you fail on the third try your account is either locked until verified or locked for a number of hours.

Yes, an eight character numeric password will be cracked instantly by almost any computer. A password using alphanumeric characters and symbols will take approximately 83.5 days to crack. Conclusion use a longer password when possible and make sure to use the a combination of numbers, upper/lower case letters, and finally symbols.

google_ad_slot = "0760899849";
google_ad_width = 336;

//-->

<script type="text/javascript"

4. Tier Your Passwords

Another strategy that I use to help protect my password is password tiering. Password tiering is simply classifying certain websites, applications, and other password driven devices into tiers. I currently use 3 tiers for my passwords. The reason for password tiering is so that you don’t use the sensitive email account password to log onto say, Twitter or another website that does not support HTTPS. The same applies for online banking, you certainly don’t want your banking password to be the same as your Digg account do you?

Below you will find an example of the tiers that I use for my passwords, you are free to duplicate it or come up with your own.

5. Use HTTPS when Possible (otherwise follow #3)

Every time you sign on to Gmail you are transmitting your user name and password via an encrypted browser connection, which means that if intercepted the information could be used by someone else. You can tell Gmail to use HTTPS connections only.

To enable this feature go to Settings > General and select Always use https, click the Save Changes button. Next time you visit gmail type;

https://mail.google.com

You can confirm your secure connection by verifying the favicon located on the address bar (see #7) and by locating the small lock in the browser status bar (bottom right of the window – see below).

Note: The location of the lock icon varies by browser. I used Firefox 3.1 for the screen shot above.

6. Secure Your Mobile Phone

Until a recent scare I didn’t have a password to get into my BlackBerry, I considered it a nuisance and an additional step to use my phone. When I lost (caught misplaced) my phone a couple of weeks ago I had a panic attack. My browser was setup with all of my accounts for auto log in, Google Calendar Sync had access to my calendar, and the Gmail App had access to my sensitive email account. Luckily I found that the phone had fallen out of my pocket and was safely tucked under the driver seat of my car.

This scare prompted me to enable password protection to my BlackBerry. You can enable password protection by navigating to Options > Security Options > General Settings and enabling the password prompt. Note: You will be able to make emergency phone calls without the password.

The proliferation of mobile phones with internet access increases the chances of phone loss, but more importantly the loss of privacy and personal information. I urge all of my readers to learn from my experience and secure your mobile phones.

7. Backup Files from the Cloud

As we place more and more data on the cloud we need a way to ensure that we have a backup of that data locally. Since I mainly use Google Docs and Gmail on the cloud I will go over some of the steps you can take to safely backup those services locally. If you would like information on a specific service not mentioned here, please drop me a line in the comments below or via email and I’ll try my best to cover it in a future article.

I found that one of the easiest and surest ways to backup a Gmail account was to use Outlook Express or Outlook with the IMAP protocol to download your messages to a local store. I have covered this method in a previous article that can be found by following the link below.

Transfer Your Outlook Emails to Gmail

To backup your Google Docs files use the Google Documents backup utility which can be downloaded from the GDocBackup website.

I will include detailed instructions for using GDocBackup in a future article.

8. Use a Safe Browser with Extensions

I personally use Firefox because it can be customized to my needs using add-ons that can be downloaded for free. However one of the reasons I really like to use Firefox is because of its security and safety. Some of those features are highlighted below.

Anti Phishing/Malware – this is one of those features that are extremely useful. Ever get an email from a Paypal wannabe? How would you know? Firefox alerts you when you visit on of these phishing sites and it really does a good job of it.

website Identification

Aside from the lock designating a secure connection, as mentioned in #3 above, Firefox provides users with additional validation for the site that they are visiting. By clicking on a website’s favicon a pop-up window will appear with information about the identity of the website being viewed. When the More Information button is pushed the you will be able to look at the number of times you have visited the website and whether or not passwords are saved for that domain. So next time you are at a website and it seems fishy, click on the favicon and discover the site’s true identity.

Firefox Plug-ins I Use to Keep Me Browsing Safely

I use WOT (Web of Trust) which indicates, based on user feedback and other databases, whether or not the site being visited is safe or not.

Download WOT from the WOT website

I also use AVG’s Search-Shield plug in which alerts me of potential threats when I’m searching the web. The screen shot below illustrates the dialog box you will see if you attempt to access a website that is deemed unsafe by AVG.

Now that I’ve covered some of the steps that I take to secure my information in the cloud, do you have any tips to offer?

Ever since I made a switch from Outlook to Gmail three months ago, I’ve compiled a list of features that I think would make Gmail better. Some of these are features that are currently available in Outlook and others apply only to Gmail, but are simply missing. In this article I’ll share with you some of those features and hope to get some of your feedback. If you feel the same way about the features mentioned below or would like to add some ideas of your own, please post them below.

Note: This is not a bashing Gmail list, very far from it, I couldn’t be happier with Gmail (well I could – if it had these 10 features), however nothing is perfect and Gmail is a constantly changing application so lists like this are a great way for users to share some ideas to make Gmail a better application.

1. Allow Users to Specify Time Interval for Retrieval of Messages from External Accounts

When I brought all of my email accounts to Gmail the first thing I noticed was the lack of speed when receiving messages sent to my external accounts. When I did a little digging I discovered that Gmail fetches emails at 60 minute intervals from external accounts, unless you manually click on the link to get emails within the Account menu.

It would be great if they allowed users to modify that interval or provide a link on the homepage (image below) where the emails can be fetched without navigating menus.

2. Ability to Directly Paste Images Into the Body of a Message

This is one of my biggest issues using Gmail. I usually send emails with screen shots that I take on-the-fly without saving, the lack of this feature really cuts down on my productivity.

3. Inclusion of Context Menu

The inclusion of a context menu that varies on the context of the objects in the message would be nice. Whether it is to add images as mentioned above or to format text, either would really increase productivity. They have this feature in Docs, but have not carried it over to Gmail.

4. Allow for Follow Up Flags and Message Priority

I mention this feature because I use it often to follow up on messages that I send. My current work around is to label them as a follow up, but even that requires an extra step.

The use of importance flags is also a much needed feature in my opinion, I use it quite often for important messages as I’m sure others do.

5. HTML and/or Signature Formatting

If you’re like me and send emails with a signature linking to your blog, then Gmail has left us with no option but to use a Firefox add-on like Better Gmail or going without a hyperlink that could help promote your blog.

6. Incorporate Task Gadget into Gmail Layout

I was really excited when Google announced the release of a Task application. It was the final straw that drove me to shift from Outlook to Gmail. However there are certain options that would make the experience even better. Google Calendar places the task list as gadget that neatly fits on the right side of the window next to the calendar. Unfortunately in Gmail the same feature is not available. The task list in Gmail is free floating or in a separate window and there is no option to fit it snuggly between the edge of the screen and the message list.

7. Push Button Backup Capability

Unless you have IMAP setup, your emails will remain in Google’s servers forever. Since Google’s Gmail service is technically still Beta, your emails can disappear and that’s it. I know, 5 years and it is still in beta. It would be really nice and it would provice peace of mind if Google had a backup option that would download all your messages to your computer or another service.

A work around to backing up your emails would be to download your messages using the IMAP protocol with Outlook or another email client. Follow the instructions in Transfer Your Outlook Emails to Gmail to backup your messages.

8. Embed Objects in Email Messages

This kind of falls in the pasting images directly option, but it goes further. This feature would provide the capability for users to insert objects like spreadsheets, slide shows, dynamic maps, calendar entries, contact cards, etc. directly into the body of a message.

9. Create PDF from Email

I love PDF’s. I use them for ALL of my archiving, specifically for emails with important information (in case my account disappears #7). By providing a link to create a PDF from a message I would bypass using my PDF printer or having to print a hard copy.

Until they add this link to Gmail, you can use Primo PDF or save the email as a document in Google Docs and then save that document as a PDF.

10. Right-side Calendar Gadget

Like the Task gadget that would sit on the right pane(see #6), the Calendar gadget would fit very nicely above the Tasks gadget. It gives it the Outlook – look, which makes a whole lot of sense, one screen to view everything.
