Throw Away Your APA Manual and Use Word Instead
Submitted by Gil on Thu, 11/20/2008 - 12:16am
As a grad student I am constantly writing papers for pretty much all of my classes, as such I have developed a distaste for anything with APA or MLA on it. I recently stumbled upon MS Word's ability to keep track of your citations, most importantly the ability to correctly format those citations throughout your paper, and finally the creation of a correctly formatted Works Cited page.

How to View A Website's Source Code
Submitted by Gil on Tue, 11/18/2008 - 9:05pm
The ability to view a website's source code is built-in most modern web browsers. The source code allows you to view how the website was coded, in other words put together, it also gives you a glimpse of certain data that would not be available to you by just browsing the website. You can view things like a website's Meta Tags, which contain important information like keywords, author email, and other useful information, and you can see what services the website publisher uses.

How to Enable and Disable Picasa's New Photo Viewer
Submitted by Gil on Tue, 11/18/2008 - 12:18am
If you've been using Picasa 3 for some time you either love or dislike the new Picasa Photo Viewer. The Picasa photo viewer was intended as a replacement for Windows built-in picture viewer. Whether the Windows Picture viewer or the Picasa Photo Viewer is preferred is a question of taste, either way I have highlighted the instructions on enabling and disabling this feature. If you have any comments or questions, please post them below.

How to Disable User Account Control in Vista
Submitted by Gil on Thu, 11/13/2008 - 10:39pm
In an effort to prevent misuse and accidental modifications to critical files and settings in Windows, Microsoft developed User Account Control in Vista. Although a noble and thoughtful solution to this issue, User Account Control or UAC for short, is one of the most annoying and frustrating "enhancements" that Microsoft has developed.

How to Minimize Outlook to the Notification Area
Submitted by Gil on Wed, 11/12/2008 - 6:42pm
At any given time I run 5-6 programs concurrently and I try to use my screens real estate as efficiently as possible. One of the simplest ways to make space in your task bar is to either close a program or minimize it to the notification area. Unfortunately many programs do not have this feature, however for those of you with Outlook you have the option of minimizing Outlook to the notification area and gaining more space in your task bar. If you have any comments or questions, please post them below.

How to Check the PHP Version in 1and1 Hosting
Submitted by Gil on Tue, 11/11/2008 - 6:11pm
One of my readers pointed out the importance of PHP version numbers when running several modules in Drupal and enabling certain workarounds. I hope I clarified his concern, as a result of this exchange I realized that those of you who run a website on a hosted server with PHP might not know how to determine the PHP version used on your server. This information is very important because it will determine the functionality and compatibility of software that is run on your server. The guide below will show you to determine the PHP version used on your server. If you have any comments or questions, please post them below.
Note: I used Dreamweaver to create the PHP file, CuteFTP to upload it, and 1&1 as my host.

How to Add A Telephone Mask in an Access Table
Submitted by Gil on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 10:23pm
This post is a continuation of an Access How-to Series that I'm working on, the last article that I posted walked you through the creation of a table in Access. This how-to will address the application of masks to fields in your table, specifically the telephone mask. The Telephone Mask can be very useful if you would like to store telephone numbers in a table in your database, not only does it format the field as a telephone number would be displayed, but it also helps with the entry of the information. If you have any comments or questions, please post them below.
