How to Decompress, Mount, and Burn UIF Files

If you've ever encountered a download that is formatted as a UIF file there are two things you need to be aware of;

1. Ensure you trust the source of this file. At times people maliciously insert viruses and other files that may damage and compromise your PC's security.

2. In order for you to use these files you have to go through several steps before you can even view the contents.

The how-to below will list step-by-step what it is that you need to do in order to use these files. If you know of any other way or any other programs that may simplify the process, please let it be known. If you have questions or comments feel free to let me know.

1. If you do not have MagicISO or MagicDisc please download and install the programs.

You will need these two programs to decompress [MagicISO]the UIF file and then mount it[MagicDisc]. MagicISO is trial software with a 300MB limit, anything below 300MB you don't need to buy the software, as for MagicDisc it is free.

2. Alright assuming you have installed these programs, launch MagicISO.

3. Click on Tools > Decompress UIF Image...

4. Browse to the directory where the UIF file resides, then select a directory where you would like to place the decompressed ISO file. Click Decompress.

5. Once the decompression process has completed you can now either mount the ISO file onto a virtual drive [MagicDisc] and/or burn it using your favorite program.

For purposes of this tutorial we will only cover the mounting of the ISO file.

Mounting the ISO File

1. Right-click on the MagicDisc icon on your taskbar. Click on Virtual CD/DVD-ROM > "Drive Letter:" No Media > Mount...

2. Locate your decompressed ISO file, click Open

3. You should now be able to go to your Virtual drive and browse the contents of your CD/DVD.

In case you wanted to burn your ISO, simply follow your CD/DVD burning software instructions on how to burn ISO's or you can drop me a line and I'll be happy to help you.

So why use UIF files?

UIF files offer the same advantages of creating ISO's and other CD/DVD images with the addition of providing compression and encryption of your files. UIF's are ideal for transferring large files over peer2peer networks, encrypting important files, and reducing the size of CD images you create.

Thanks..

Thanks .. I had no idea how i was gonna get away wit the file i downloaded .. !

10x what?

10 times what?
have you never compressed your .iso images before? tar? bzip? rar? even plain old zip? UIF is a bullsh1t file 'format' that needs to be erased from existence. why use proprietary software anyways? the world belongs to Open Source, if you think otherwise then I suggest you look at Oracle. Their CEO makes over $80M/year with an OPEN SOURCE software!
Enjoy

UIF sucks.

Just zip the ISO into an encrypted archive. You won't need an extra program just for one type of image, plus you (and your peers) won't have to buy any useless programs.

I just extracted files from a UIF that was the same size as the ISO, so compression is either seriously lacking or not a real concern. It seems as though MagisISO is full of crap and/or people are just stupid, wanting a bunch of extra proprietary - for pay - steps between them and their data. Same with DAA and PowerISO.

I can hear it now... "Hi, I realize you and you friends are happy and being totally satisfied by your current free system, but how would you like a feature where you and anyone you want to share information with must purchase a useless extra program to access the data?"

If it was actually universal, Nero, Daemon or any other image creating/mounting/burning software would be able to work with it. I'm happy they've started offering MagicDisc... for years the only way to get to a +300MB UIF was to obtain MagicISO through "other" means, which sucks, or do without.

Thanks for straightening out the process for all the neophytes! Hopefully we can wipe out the scourge of worthless proprietary formats once all are educated! I urge all UIF victims to convert to ISO and dump the offending image type.

BTW, nice Drup site!
