How to Speed Up Shutdowns on Your Computer Part I

View Tutorial One of my biggest problems at the end of the day is shutting down my laptop...it takes way too long to shut down. I've gotten it to where it's fast booting up, but the shutdown times sometimes exceed a couple of minutes. 1. These tweaks require that you venture into your registry, please backup your registry.

2. Go to Start > Run when the Run box opens type in regedit

3. Your registry should have opened [Just checking...have you backed up your registry?] Navigate to the following keys; HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Control Panel > Desktop

4. When you get to Desktop click on it, the pane to the right should have a listing of several keys, double-click on;

>WaitToKillAppTimeout, change it to '1000' then double-click (changing this forces your computer during shutdown to end programs that are running much faster)

Yes, this tweak will allow Windows to shutdown faster. But you may end up paying a high price for it. WaitToKillAppTimeout sets the time Windows will wait for a process to gracefully close, write data to files, etc. After the timeout Windows will forcefully terminate the process, regardless of what it might need to do. If this tweak improves shutdown time you know that this has occured for at least one process. This can cause data loss or corruption. You have been warned!

What about those programs

What about those programs that just take longer than 1 second to shut down? Chances are that this method will corrupt some files because the parent process got killed in the middle of saving the settings.

But then again: 1000 ms is a long time for a computer.

would closing all the

would closing all the windows you have running before shutting down prevent that?

Or do you mean the various background processes

Thanks

Thanks a lot for the tips!

No problem...

You're welcome!
