Tired of waiting around for Gmail to send messages? Sending many messages at once, but can’t begin to use your email again until they’re all sent? Now you don’t have to worry anymore with the new Gmail Labs feature, called Background Send, which will send messages in the background. You can use Gmail regularly while you send either one or hundreds of emails. No matter how long the sending process will take, you can instantly access your email again after sending your messages. A notification at the top of your inbox will show you that your messages are still sending in the background.

If all the messages are sent, you will get the message sent notification. Otherwise, a red error will popup notifying you that there was a problem sending your message. You have the opportunity to fixit now or later. You don’t have to stop doing what you’re doing just to fix the problem email. However, you should check this problem before you close Gmail, because chances are this problem isn’t going to show up next time you startup Gmail.

Hotmail, the webmail application put out by Microsoft is now becoming more of a desktop program when used with Internet Explorer 9 and Windows 7. If you weren’t aware, Windows 7 has a pinning feature which allows you to “pin” programs to your taskbar for quick use. Some applications have certain features and options you can make directly from the taskbar, without even having the program open on your screen.

Now IE9 has adopted these pinning features for Hotmail, making it seem more like a desktop email client, rather than a webmail client. Within the taskbar you can go to the Hotmail Home, Inbox, Calendar, Contacts or even go directly to sending an email. Just simply right click on the pinned site to get direct access to the pinning features. When Hotmail is pinned it will also inform you when you have new messages, so you don’t have to constantly check your browser for new Hotmail messages.

To pin a website simply drag it from the IE9 window to your taskbar. Many other sites can use the pinning features when used with Internet Explorer 9 and Windows 7 like eBay, Groupon, CNN, Facebook and many others. What are you doing to take advantage of site pinning in Internet Explorer 9?

Account hijacking is nothing new to the account and email world and there really hasn’t been much of a stolen account decrease over time. Hijackers are finding new ways everyday to steal your account information, so it’s important to make your account as secure as possible. Every email provider, even Gmail and Hotmail have issues with Hijackers. There’s no permanent way to stop them especially since there so many accounts out there that are easily hijacked. While some security relies on the email provider, a lot of it also resides on the end user.

Microsoft has taken some initiative to help prevent hijackers from taking your account. Hotmail is now monitoring for strange activity, such as sending a lot of email that is marked as spam. If Hotmail detects strange activity they will immediately block your account.

You will then have to use the account recovery wizard to help restore your account. Your account can be restored by following some simple steps, but you must make sure you have this information is already in your account; otherwise you’ll have to contact a support representative to help you along.

You should provide a secondary email and phone number so that verification codes can be sent to either medium. Providing these credentials also helps you reset your password if you forget it in the future.

I recently quit my job and among the things I took with me was a copy of the Outlook archive file I created to save important messages. The archive file was saved as a .pst file which is commonly used by Outlook to save messages, calendar entries, to-do’s, and other items. When I copied the file to my personal computer I needed to a way for Outlook to open the file and access the contents so that I can save the emails to my Outlook file. The quick how-to below will show you how-to open/import Outlook .pst files from another computer into Outlook 2010.

If you have other Outlook tips to share, please post them below.

In previous articles I detailed how I was able to move from Outlook to Google for all of my email and organizational tasks. In this article I’ll cover how I moved all of my email accounts to Gmail. I’ll walk you through the simple process of adding an account from Hotmail that will be accessible via Gmail. If you have any tips to share, please post them below.

Note: It appears that users can add up to five accounts, if you attempt, as I did to add the sixth account you will received the error message found at the end of this how-to. I used the Hotmail example, but you can add other accounts from Att, Covad, Yahoo, and others.

1. Log on to your Gmail account and click on the Settings link located on the top right corner of the screen.

2. Click on the Accounts tab and click on the Add a mail account you own link in the Get mail from other accounts section.

3. The Add a mail account you own pop-up will appear. Enter the email address you would like to add and click on the Next Step button to proceed.

4. Enter the highlighted information, Username, Password and in most cases you can leave the default options for POP Server and Port. The other option are at your discretion. Click the Add Account button when you are done.

Note: I suggest you add a check mark to Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail. You can also label the incoming messages from this account to help you identify them.

5. Repeat for all the email accounts you would like to add.

Tips

-Error message when I attempted to add more than five accounts – You already have the maximum number of accounts allowed

-Emails are fetched in hour intervals so keep that in mind when you are expecting messages at a certain time. Messages will not come in until Gmail fetches them at it’s predetermined interval. At the moment it does not look like there is a way to modify this interval. However you can manually tell Gmail to fetch the emails by going the Accounts tab in the Settings menu and clicking on the Check mail now link.
