One of the settings I always enjoyed in Outlook is the ability to customize work hours so that my available time (work time) would appear on the calendar as a reminder not to schedule anything past a certain time.

Google has taken this concept event further and now allows users to hide those morning and evening hours that take up precious, unused calendar space.

The new setting can be found by following the instructions below to activate the new feature.

Enable Hide Morning/Night

In the steps below we will enable the new labs feature in Google Calendar.

1. Click the gear icon (Options) and then click Labs from the drop-down that appears.

2. Click the Enable radio button for the Hide morning and night labs feature.

3. Click Save to enable the feature. Return to the calendar.

Hide Morning & Nights in Google Calendar

In this section I will show you how to use the new hide morning and nights feature to make your calendar leaner.

After you return to the calendar you will notice that the upper and lower ranges of the time scale will appear with grey shading.

When you place your cursor on the edge of the shading between morning and daytime hours a slider will appear.

1. Move the slider to adjust the time range to hide. The selected range will hide.

2. To view the hidden range just click on it (specifically where it says “time-time” shaded in grey).

Once clicked the range will expand. To hide it again simply click on the hidden range again and it will collapse.

Note: If you have appointments in the hidden areas they will still appear in a condensed view, so don’t worry about appointments disappearing. They will all be there.

Software/Hardware: Google Chrome running on Mac OS X.

Gmail is a great tool for connecting with friends and family, but sometimes it’s hard to find all of the information you need from them. Often enough, you have to look for information in many different areas of Gmail, so now Gmail is making it easier to find all of this information by adding a new widget to the side of Gmail. The new People Widget will pop up on the right side of the email showing recent emails, Buzz posts, calendar and availability, and shared documents.

You’ll also have the ability to quickly start a chat with individuals or groups and even schedule a meeting all right inside the People Widget in Gmail. The new widget should be appearing over the next few weeks, so keep your eye out for an added widget to the side of your emails.

Researchers have found security vulnerability in Android 2.3.3 in which your login credentials could be stolen. Since web applications like Google Calendar, Twitter, Facebook and others use unsecured connections to login, you may be at risk when connecting to a Wi-Fi hotspot. When you automatically connect to a secured connection, some of your online accounts will automatically login to synchronize your data. If you’re connecting to an unsecured hotspot you may be at risk. A hotspot could be setup for hackers to intentionally steal your login information, so it’s best to stay on a reliable wireless hotspot.

Anyone who knows how to use Wireshark could potentially steal your login information. The screenshot below shows the credentials of a Picasa account being openly visible inside of packet obtained through Wireshark.

While the Android 2.3.4 fixes most of the security issues, it’s still not 100% secure. Your best bet is to not connect automatically to an unsecured network when it’s in range. Additionally you could also disable the automatic synchronization from some of the website we’ve listed before until a full patch is released.

You may also want to inform others of this security issue since not everyone updates their phones frequently enough.

If you use Google Calendar a lot, you’ll probably have a pretty full calendar. That calendar can become hard to read or even comprehend if you’re in a hurry. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a way where you could quickly distinguish what you have to do and when? Now you can with the simple new update to Google Calendar, the ability to add colors to an event.

Adding colors to an event can not only help you distinguish what events are what, but makes your calendar look a whole lot neater, rather than having the same cluttered black and white calendar. The new event coloring feature is very similar to the label coloring feature seen in Gmail. Just simply click on your event and click the colored square of your liking. You can choose from eight colors: Gray, Blue, Green, Purple, Red, Yellow, Orange, and Pink. Hopefully eight colors are enough to sort your calendar.

One of the things that I’ve learned about running an online business is that everyone you deal with is on a different time zone. This of course can be a major pain when your calendar can only display two time zones at a time (Calendar view) and events can only be created for the time zone you are on, without the math.

Today’s update Google Calendar changes all of that. Calendar now allows users to create calendar entries for different time zones and even calendar entries that span several time zones, which can e very helpful for flights that span across time zones. The option (as you will see below) is just a click away and two drop-downs away.

1. To enable time zone usage, click on the Time Zone link to choose a time zone for your event.

2. Select the country and the time zone, click Done.

Check out for yourself and let us know what you think in the comments section below.

How many of you have more than one Gmail account? Like me, you probably got a silly Gmail email address when Gmail was first launched years ago, and you later got a more serious email account as Gmail matured. Yet you are still receiving messages on both email accounts and switching between them requires that you sign out of one and sign in to the other.

A new feature introduced by Google allows you to sign in to multiple accounts without having to go back and forth signing in and out of your Google accounts.

In order to use this feature you must first enable it (instructions below), but before you run on over to Google and change everything there are a couple of things you need to be aware of.

The following products are supported; Google Calendar, Gmail, Code, Reader, Sites, and Voice.

Offline Mail and Offline Calendar is NOT available (as of this writing).

Google products not listed above will default to the first account that you signed in to using your current web browser session.

The account you’re currently using is displayed at the top of most Google product pages, or at the bottom of most pages on mobile devices. Always check to make sure you’re using the account you want.

OK, now that we got that out-of-the-way, let’s enable multiple sign-in’s for Google.

If setting automatic notifications in Google Calendar leaves you yearning for more control over your calendar then you will have to set them individually each time you create a new event/appointment. Google Calendar provides users with three types of notifications for calendar entries; Email, SMS (Short Message Service) to your mobile phone, and a Pop-up. All of these notifications/alerts can be configured to appear at a time specified by you. If you are using pop-up alerts and have devices synchronized to your Google Calendar, those alerts should appear in the device’s notification system. In the guide below I will show you how to add reminders/notifications/alerts to your calendar entries in Google Calendar.

If you have any comments or questions, please post them below. To add notifications automatically follow these instructions.

1. Click on a calendar entry and click on the Edit event details link.

Remember you will have to repeat these steps for each calendar if you have more than one calendar.

4. When the Settings page for the selected calendar appears, click on the Notifications tab.

5. Click on the Add a reminder link in the Event reminders section.

6. Choose a method to receive the reminder and time interval.

7. Click Save to add a default reminder to all events created for the selected calendar.
