by

Traditionally you would only be able to change the Wallpaper for the Lock Screen. In this guide I will show you how to change the Wallpaper for both the Lock Screen and the Home Screen in iOS4.

If you have any comments or questions, please post them below. Want to learn how to multitask in iOS4? Check out How to Multitask with iOS4.

This feature does not work on 3G?

  • http://www.gilsmethod.com Gilberto J Perera

Phil – as far as I understand it, it is not supported in the 3G. The other feature not supported is the ability to multitask. Thank you for your question. By the way how is the 3G running with iOS 4, faster, slower, or about the same?

Wow, I can’t believe they left the home screen wallpaper out on the 3G, like what bs. It’s not like it doesn’t have the hardware capability to put a freaking picture behind a bunch of icons. I really don’t like apple.

3G seems to be running even slower than iOS 3 on the 3G. Going in to reply to an incoming text is slow, and also just jumping from app to app seems slower. Cannot wait for my iPhone 4.

WHY DOESNT IT WORK ON 3G!!!! I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO IT SO MUCH! even the ipod touch can do it…yet the iphone cannot

  • Kev

The 3G is incredibly faster with this update…unbelievable. Very polished…

    Tom,

I agree…it’s something so simple, yet they failed to exclude and they know its something users want…agh, those are the things that Apple does that really don’t make sense sometimes.

My take is that they want you to get out of the 3G…just my thought. By the way, how’s the 3G performing with iOS4? I’ve had mixed reports from visitors, some say it’s faster, others that it is slower. I hope you can share your experience. Thanks in advance.

I don’t find it has been performing slower or faster. I love the look and think it’s amazing. folders and playlists are definately something I’m happy about. I just wish we could have the backgrounds as well. I suppose I’ll be going for the Iphone 4 sometime

  • Bebe

My 3G phone seems to be running a bit quicker in iOS4. It had been hanging and freezing a lot lately, and this doesn’t seem to be a problem, but I’ll need to road test some more to be sure.

    I’m bummed that I can’t change my wallpaper :(
I usually have a picture from Photos for my homescreen, and that has gone all blurry for some reason. Bew!

I’ve just installed ISO4 a few minutes ago and… my 3g runs faster but I can’t believe apple left out the wallpaper for the home screen !! it is one of the coolest feat. =(

Thats it, I’m getting android phone. To leave this out from 3G as a cynical ploy to make people feel left behind id rubbish! This handset is less than 18 months old and already they artificially penalise owners. Oops sorry I’m not an owner as you dont own your phone since you dont have the choice to open it, change it or do what you want with it. In fact I think Apple probably break consumer law here by artificially disabling something intentionally as a marketing ploy.
    Goodbye closed world of Apple.

A lot of folks are bummed out about the wallpapers, I mean the multitasking I can understand, but the Wallpapers, that’s a little silly if you ask me. Apple should have included that. You mentioned you were having problems with the phone hanging, etc. was that before or after the upgrade? Thanks for the feedback.

    Armando,

I’m getting the feeling that a lot of 3G customers are not happy about being left out of the wallpaper, probably one of the simplest features to implement, but I guess that’s Apple’s way of giving you an incentive to upgrade to the 3GS or the 4. I still don’t think it’s right though.

My 3G does seem faster and this background issue, while seemingly trivial, is a big deal. It clearly shows that Apple cares more about the $ than the consumer. Changing the background was one of the first things to be jail broken! Droid should have evolved to a point where it is a serious contender when my contract is up. Apple is doing way too many things to alienate the consumer right now. I hope it comes back to haunt them.

  • http://www.gilsmethod.com Gilberto J Perera

    Paul,

Thanks for your feedback. Yeah it appears that Apple cares more about the $ when it comes to issue like this, they are enticing 3G customers to upgrade to the 3GS and the iPhone 4 by not including them with features like Wallpapers and others. I think that the only way Apple can overcome this negative publicity (first AT&T/Apple for orders and then the lack of functionality on the 3G) is to either open up to Verizon so that they can sell more handsets or open up a bit more. Only time will tell.

I am very disappointed with apple right now. I also have the 3g and respect the fact that they advised ahead of time that the muliti tasking would not be available on the 3g but they did not say to my recollection anything about the background feature not being available. I am not an apple hater by any means as I also own an ipad and feel that they are well ahead in certain areas but now instead of waiting for the white IPhone4 to come out I am seriously thinking about moving away from the IPhone completely. I hate the feeling of the bait and switch, what a poor way to treat loyal customers over something so simple.

  • http://www.gilsmethod.com Gilberto J Perera

    Lpetey,

I think that the statement “bait and switch” is how I have felt about Apple lately…don’t get me wrong I too enjoy their products, the iPad and the iPhone, but the fact that two months after announcing the iPad’s great unlimited plan…AT&T now places caps on new accounts, the same applies for the iPhone 4. They’ve also made it impossible to use an iPhone 4 that is unlocked on an existing AT&T unlimited plan because the SIM cards are different. I’m sure all of this was known ahead of time and they have along with AT&T screwed the customer on this one…there are rumors that the iPhone will be headed to Verizon and there’s always an Android phone, but for now I’ll stick to my iPhone. Thanks for the feedback.

No, the background image on the homescreen for the 3G is not supported. Not enough memory and apparently lagtime increases. If this is the case, I’m not at all surprised. I jailbroke my 3G last year and did experience lag with images set on the homescreen. I restored it to normal use after I decided I just wasn’t getting enough out of the jailbreak. What, honestly, is the big deal about images on the homescreen? It’ll be covered with your apps >90% of the time anyways…

  • http://www.gilsmethod.com Gilberto J Perera

    Charlie,

I like the Wallpapers, but even my wife said the same thing, “They are covered almost the entire time…” I think it’s just another way to customize the iPhone and make it yours…just my .02 cents. Thanks for sharing your experience with a Jailbroken iPhone, perhaps 3G owners will find some solace knowing that performance would be hindered if that option were enabled.

I couldnt believe they left out the background feature. When I updated last night it also lost my whole phone book, I got back about 40 contacts from text messages and re saving names from guessing who the message was from, but i had over 200 contacts with email addresses and all information saved in there and can not find a way to get it back! Only last week had i completley updated my phonebook to include all of the information as well.

I cant seem to find a way to restore the phone book either.

My phone doesnt seem to be working any faster and I notice a bit of a lag when opening texts.

VERY dissapointed, considering iPhone 4 doesnt come out in Australia for a few months and I can imagine the wait there will be on them anyway.

  • Joe

I realize that the wallpaper button does not work on iPhone 3G but will it work on a third generation iPod Touch?

  • Baited not Switched

Thats total bs they left out the homescreen wp. I was a die hard fan. no longer. Coz Apple starting to be like Nokia. The marketing i meant.

Back then Samsung always had these technologies and sold it to users to use, Nokia held it back and market it slowly.

Basically same thing im starting to feel bout Apple.

    bait and switch allright.

im reallyyyyyy annoyed that the background feature doesnt work on my 3g – i was looking forward to that the most!! the folders thing is good though… a better way to organise my apps. i also understand y the multitaskin doesnt work, but its still prettyy annoying havin all my friends with multitasking, backgrounds etc. while i havent got that on my iphone. and also my iphone is working at the same pace it was before, which is verrrryyy slow even though i hardly have one and a half pages of apps in total. at first the thought ran through my mind about upgrading, but then after readin all these comments i see its just a way to get more $. i think now ill just switch to an android or blackberry…

  • Bluestimes

iOS4 is work for me! But, in the first place I really disappointed for this feature that not support with my 3G. In the other hand, if this feature will slow down my phone, I think I will “tab it off” from my iPhone right a way!

I’m also a 3G user, and was excited to find out how to change the background image until I found out here that it’s not possible, and the reason why, which most of you understand. Then I see all these people getting so upset over it, that they are willing to move away from iPhone completely. This is quite funny! You feel like you are being “bait and switched” yet you UNDERSTAND that enabling the background image feature will make the phone lag. So you’re willing to have a laggy phone so you could have a picture in the background?? Gimme a break!

Apple is a business, so they will care about $, but to think they left this feature out to “bait and switch” someone is pretty ridiculous. They would rather have a more functioning phone then a customized laggy phone. Just my .02..

    KS,

I’m sorry to hear about the loss of your contacts…I’ve heard of similar problems in online forums. Did you perform the backup prior to upgrading? Your contacts may be salvaged there…When you say texts are referring to sms messages or books, because I’ve heard that the iBooks application is completely useless on the 3G running iOS4. Hope you are able to recover your phone book.

Your contacts may be salvaged there…When you say texts are referring to sms messages or books, because I’ve heard that the iBooks application is completely useless on the 3G running iOS4. Hope you are able to recover your phone book.

This is from the Apple website – “Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking, custom wallpaper, and Bluetooth keyboard support are available only with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009).”

    Sara,

Your comments reflect how a lot of users are feeling right now. It seems that Apple is doing a disservice to 3G owners, but know that adding multitasking and the background wallpaper would consume more resources and would make your phone even slower…so I think Apple just doesn’t want to degrade your experience with the 3G any further. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Bluestimes – I agree, if there is something that is going to slow down your phone, there’s a reason why Apple left it out in the first place. Thanks for commenting.

    Gilberto,

What I would like is a picture in my LOCK Screen and another background the rest of the time. It seems as if I choose my pic I see it even when I am looking at the icons, which makes it harder to focus on them. Can you suggest a solution?

    Bob,

You can select an image that is less distracting so that it is used as the wallpaper in the Home screen. You know that you have the option to select a different wallpaper for each? Review the guide again, in step 7 you have the choice to choose which wallpaper to apply and where. Hope this helps.

No need to photograph them, just sync the files to your iPhone as you would any other photo and the pictures will be available. An even easier way to do it is to email yourself the picture and then save the image on the iPhone…let me know if you need more clarification.
